Running VMRC (VMware Remote Console) 9.0 on Fedora 28

Published on Author admin

To run VMRC (VMware Remote Console) on Fedora 28 use below steps.

Download VMRC 9.0 from VMware website (around 60MB):
VMware Remote Console 9.0 for Linux

Install VMRC 9.0 as a root:

bash ./VMware-Remote-Console-9.0.0-4288332.x86_64.bundle

To fix zlib version conflict (Fedora 28 ships with zlib 1.2.11 while VMRC 9.0 ships with zlib 1.2.9) use following commands to link system libraries to VMware lib directory:

mv /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1.old
ln -s /usr/lib64/libz.so.1 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1

To list installed VMware components (including VMRC):

vmware-installer -l

To remove VMRC:

vmware-installer -u vmware-vmrc
